How does the RRSP actually work?
The RRSP is one of the most powerful tools in the Canadian tax system —
but only if you understand how to use it.
You contribute money and receive a tax deduction today,
lowering your taxable income.
That money is invested and grows tax-deferred,
meaning you don’t pay tax on the growth each year.
Later — usually in retirement —
you withdraw the funds and pay tax then,
often at a lower rate.
The goal isn’t just saving.
It’s shifting income from high-tax years
to lower-tax years.
When RRSPs are structured properly,
they can significantly improve your long-term outcome.

If you are a Safe Pacific client with a Sun Life participating policy, this is an important update to be aware of.
Sun Life has announced that it is maintaining the 2026–2027 dividend scale, effective April 1, 2026, including the 6.25 percent dividend scale interest rate. Special dividends for eligible pre-2004 and pre-1996 policies are also being maintained.
This update reflects the ongoing strength and prudent management of the Sun Life Participating Account. As always, remember that the dividend scale interest rate is not the return on your policy, dividends are not guaranteed, and future performance should be illustrated conservatively.
